Product Description

Maintaining SQL Server 2005 high availability in a global information environment is the database administrators greatest practical challenge. Availability is as much about people and processes as it is about technology. Pro SQL Server 2005 High Availability covers the technology, people, processes, and real–world best practices for planning, deploying, administering, and maintaining highly available SQL Server 2005 instances.

With years of experience as a database consultant and production DBA, Allan Hirt provides in–depth, detailed advice on what it takes to ensure SQL Server high availability for businesses of any size. This is not an academic text; its not based on lab experiments, but on real–world experience. This book is a dramatic update and revision of the authors previous best-seller on SQL Server 2000. It gives sound guidance to DBAs and system administrators on how to really get the job done.

  • This book provides comprehensive, clear, detailed coverage of all major availability issues.
  • The author covers both availability and performance, from the perspective of high availability.
  • The book addresses the crucial needs of enterprise–class, 24x7 SQL Server 2005 implementations.
  • You’ll gain insight that other SQL Server documentation and whitepapers don’t provide.

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars Practical book about SQL2005 HA features. Lot of screenshoots, just "meat" inside!   October 6, 2009
Jose A. Campo (Houston, TX)
I am really surprised this books has no reviews yet. I owned it since 2008 and learned a lot from it. The book is a practical approach about SQL2005 High Availability features. It shows you step by step how to implement SQL2005 failover, Log Shipping, Database Mirror and replication; those are the core items for SQL2005 HA technology. You will find a lot of screenshoots, almost for every step, so you will find it easy to read and follow. There is also a dedicated chapter for Backup and Restore, chapter #3. Has some theory about how SQL handles the logs and how you can backup and restore via T-SQL; I really like that chapter and the explanations are really good, with lots of pictures as well.

This is the kind of book you should keep at work, not at home, so you can grab it and find any reference very quickly. Very practical and useful. There is not much troubleshooting explanations if things goes wrong but I think that's not the objective on this particular book.

Was looking for a similar and most recent book for SQL2008 and guess what :-) ... is on the market as well, same author: Pro SQL Server 2008 Failover Clustering. I can not make a comment yet about that one, but my expectations are high. I just ordered it from Amazon today and will be reviewing it soon.
